Chicago NATO Protest Photos

I attended two separate events last weekend related to the NATO summit held in Chicago.  On Saturday 5/19/12 there was a protest at Rahm Emanuel's house in Ravenswood, and on Sunday 5/20/12 there was a march through the loop.  There were also events on Friday and Monday but I didn't attend those.

The focus of the Saturday protest was social service cuts that Mayor Rahm Emanuel is making in Chicago.  The second protest was primarily focused on removing troops from Afghanistan.  Both events, as far as I was involved, were peaceful.  The Sunday event did eventually turn violent, as a group of anarchists clashed with police, but this was after the official protest ended and I had gone home.

The first four photos are from Sunday:

The photo above shows the police lined up on Jackson before the protest began.  I tried not to focus too much on the police, but it was hard not to as they were everywhere.

A group of veterans led the march on Sunday:

This next photo was taken from on top of a planter box as the march crossed under the Orange Line on Harrison:

I imagine the blue helmets in this next shot are meant to soften the look of riot police, and I would say the results are mixed:

The women above, Nan Wigmore of Portland Oregon, popped up all over the internet this weekend.  She was featured in an MSNBC article and I've seen her photo on flickr and elsewhere.  I hope I have as much energy as her when I'm 75.

This last photo is one of Rahm Emanuel's neighbors.  I love how they were all sitting on the porch like they were watching some sort of street show:

As usual, you can find more photos on flickr if you're interested.
