Storm Candids

The snow continues in Chicago! Some candid photos taken on January 2nd, along Clark Street in Andersonville:

These were all taken with a Nikon D7100 and 16-85mm lens. My advice for shooting in the winter: put the best lens you have on your camera and stick with it. If you absolutely must change lenses-- step inside so you're away from the wind and precipitation. While the D7100 is fairly weather resistant, that doesn't apply if you open up the lens mount, and any water that gets inside could be the end of your camera.

Photo of the Week: Go with the Flow

One of my favorite views in Chicago is featured this week, Lake Street looking east into Chicago's loop. I spent about five minutes editing this photo, which is a refreshing change as I can sometimes take hours on a single photo. Yes, the overexposure is intentional. I wanted this one to be really, really contrasty.

This photo made it into flickr's explore and received about 2500 views yesterday. It's always a little weird, and random, when that happens, but obviously very flattering.

You shouldn't need to be a CEO to matter in politics

The photo above was taken during a visit to the Occupy Chicago protests on Sunday, October 16th. I was down in the loop for Open House Chicago, and made a detour to take these photographs. It was a fairly sparse crowd on this particular afternoon, with no more than 75-- highly enthusiastic-- people holding signs and congregating at Jackson and Lasalle. I like this photo because it's both a portrait and a candid-- the man with the sign noticed me and was smiling for the camera, where as the "security" guy seems to be looking off at who knows what.

I don't intend this post to be a discussion of the merits of Occupy Chicago or the Occupy movement at large. There are other places for that. This is a photography blog, and my job as a photographer is to document interesting things happening in my city. This certainly qualifies. That said, I support everyone's right to peacefully protest their government, regardless of ideology. I believe the ability to do so is the cornerstone of a functioning democracy.
