Chicago Reader Photo Issue

One of my photographs is featured in the Chicago Reader's fifth annual photo issue this week, along with some other talented photographers.  I finally tracked down a print copy today:

I like how they put my photo opposite one of my favorite columns, "Straight Dope":

This year's issue is themed "money" and I made several submissions all with a general recession theme.  The photo the Reader chose is titled "hope vs debt" and is actually from January of 2009.  I shot this from the Wilson Ave. Red Line L platform:

Photo of the Week: no entry to the golden city

no entry to the golden city

My photo of the week is also featured on Gapers Block today.  I like the way it looks on their home page so I saved a screen shot of this one:

Gapers

This is the pedway bridge across Lower Randolph, connecting the Monroe Parking Garage (and Grant Park) to 300 East Randolph.  I took this in the early evening after the bridge had been closed.  Although I had seen pictures of this previously, I was never sure exactly where it was.  I stumbled upon it quite randomly while walking through Grant Park one evening.

Photo Details: Nikon D90 with 16-85mm, 1/50sec at f5.3, ISO800.  This would have been a good time to have a fast f1.4 or f1.8 lens with me, or even better, a tripod, but the 16-85mm did okay thanks to its VR.  I applied a bit of noise reduction and sharpening to this in post production.  It's also cropped slightly from the original.

Chicago Public Radio - March 23, 2010

I have a photo on the front page of Chicago Public Radio today:

shadow puppets

This one is titled "shadow puppets".  In case it isn't obvious, that's an L station casting a shadow onto a nearby building.

Here's a screen shot for good measure:

Someone recently asked me: "so, do you get paid when they use your photos?", and the answer is "no".  I let CPR use my photography for the same reason that other people donate money, or volunteer at a pledge drive-- because I think public radio is a good thing and this is my way of supporting it.  It's also nice to have a little exposure here and there, and this drives quite a bit of traffic to my flickr account.

CPR archives their daily photos and you can find my archive here.

Photo Details: Nikon D90 with 16-85mm lens, 1/800sec at f4.5, ISO200.

Chicago Reader 1000 Words

The Chicago Reader has selected one of my photos again this year for their 1000 Words issue.  It's on page 16 if you happen to stumble upon a copy around Chicagoland.  Or, I could just post a photo:

This was taken at the Pitchfork Music Festival over the summer, stage left, towards the end of the Flaming Lips set.  Here's the original:

confetti explosion!

Photo details: Nikon D90 with 55-200mm lens, 1/30sec at f4 and ISO800.

I hope everyone has a fantastic New Years!  I'm looking forward to taking a boatload of new photos in 2010.

Chicago Reader 1000 Words Cover

The Chicago Reader featured one of my photographs in print this week, as part of their annual "1000 Words" issue.  My photo is on the right side of this page:

And here's the original:

This issue should be on newstands until Wednesday, January 7th.  Another one of my photographs was used on their web site but didn't make it into the print edition.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my photos, either here or over at flickr, during the last year!  I appreciate the feedback.

oh christmas tree...

oh christmas tree

A very meta-Christmas photo.  Or a meta-taking a photo of Christmas photo.  Something like that.

Nikon D50 with 50mm lens, f1.8, 30sec exposure hand held.   The forward camera is a Canon A510, being held by the lovely (and very patient) Jenny.

This photo was featured on Chicago Public Radio 12/20/07 and Chicagoist 12/19/07.

Many thanks to the fine folks at that publication.
